This week with the Edmodo application learning was really a great hands on experience. It is easy to set up and to create assignments. This technology resource will be a great asset to the classroom setting so that students can get a real life experience of how technology can benefit their learning. Students are engaged longer with this type of assignments since they crave the technology hands on use. The creation of the assignments can have many different aspects of students selecting their responses to include the typical multiple choice answers, fill in the blank, true or false and the short answer type. Teachers can unload pictures, video clips and files that students can have access to. The use of the "backpack" to hold the students assignments is a good indicator for students to remember where their assignment are stored. Assignments can have deadlines for submissions and sending deadline reminders would benefit students with turning in assignments on time. I really like that you can schedule when you want to release your assignment at a specific day, so you can create assignments early and have them send out later. The grade book feature is also good to keep up with daily grades and quiz grades. Students and parents can get immediate feedback about assignment grades.
This technology resource would be very useful to my fifth graders so that the beginning of the school year to send out an introduction message welcoming students into our new classroom. I would also send out a poll to get to know about students interests and what their expectations are for this school year. Another use for Edmodo would be to create online assignments or quizzes different from the typical paper/pencil assignments for students to submit from their homes. Students would have to be committed so that to submit assignments before the assignment deadlines. Parents would be able to follow their children's progress and there would be no surprises about grades. Constant monitoring from parents is an important key to ensure student's success and with this form of communication parents can join in and assist students with thier assignments and monitor their progress through out the school year.
Bertha,
ReplyDeleteI too enjoyed learning about Edmodo, this week, because it was very easy to get into the application and the information was very easy to grasp and apply. I can definitely see how useful this application would be a great asset to every teacher, student and parent that is able to use it. Thank you for the ideas that you shared about the use of Edmodo with your students, specially in regards to communicating with students and parents, alike.
Bertha,
ReplyDeleteYou are correct that staying organized as a teacher and teaching your students to be prepared is essential. They are used to carrying a backpack and keeping everything that is important to them inside, so why not correlate the backpack idea with Edmodo too. You must be a wonderful 5th grade teacher instilling this quality in your students. We can never give up trying for our students.

Bertha,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that students will be more engaged if technology is involved. Unfortunately this new generation is all about technology, anything without it is pain to their ears.
One of my favorite parts about Edmodo, like you, was the fact that you could create the assignments, release them whenever, and they would all be graded for you! This is a great resource for us to use!
I really liked the idea of sending a poll for students in finding their interests and expectations for the school year. This is a great idea that I will try to implement next year.
Bertha,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how great the backpack feature is. I know nowadays students recieve so much homework that they might lose an assignment if they do not organize or store them properly. Edmodo is good for that reason, and if anything does get lost, they can always reference and go back to their virtual backpack or teachers post to retrieve them.
